Whatever instrument you wish to study, Music Theory is essential for your understanding and appreciation of music. Some call it the all-important Grammar of Music. It explains the elements that construct a piece of music, including notation, key signatures, time signatures, and chord progressions.
Learning music theory comes with several benefits:
Allows to learn new pieces faster
Improves sight-reading through understanding the structure of the musical piece
Better understanding and more appreciation of music
Mastery in composition or improvisation
For students who want to pursue Grades 6-8 in ABRSM exams must first pass Grade 5 in Music Theory. So we always recommend that students start understanding theory as soon as they consider taking the ABRSM exams.
Aural Training is a skill that allow musicians to learn to identify, solely by hearing, pitches, intervals, melody, chords, rhythms, and other basic elements of music. The application of this skill is like taking dictation in a spoken language.
It is important for students pursuing the ABRSM exams as it constitutes a decent section of the examiner’s evaluation. That said, students who are good in Aural Training tend to score higher marks in the exams.
